2022 Football

Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League after winning 1-0 from Liverpool. Karim Benzema was the best player for Real Madrid and helped them win the Champions League and La liga; he was the top scorer in both leagues. It was his best campaign in terms of goals and assists. Karim Benzema managed to score 44 goals and provide 15 assists in just 46 games. His amazing year was rewarded with the Ballon d’Or.

The Premier League was won by Manchester City. They won the league with 93 points. The title race was decided at the last game round as Liverpool ended with 92 points.

Premier League 2021-22

Bayern’s Bundesliga title wasn’t a surprise. The team won 24 games. They drew five games and lost five times. They finished the season with 77 points, while the number two (Borussia Dortmund) ended with 69 points.

AC Milan won the league in Italy and finished two points above Inter Milan and won the league for the first time since 2010/11.

PSG won the Ligue 1, finishing with a total of 85 points, 15 points above the number two, Olympique Marseille.

2022 was also all about the World Cup, that’s been over for a week now. Argentina won the World Cup after a stunning final and Lionel Messi was finally able to lift the trophy. Argentina played a thrilling final against France, which ended in 3-3 after extra time. Argentina won after a penalty shootout.

WC Final

2022 Cricket

The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 was the 8th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament. This edition was played in Australia this year. England played Pakistan in the final and beat Pakistan by five wickets. It’s their second ICC T20 title. Pakistan scored 137 runs (137/8) in 20 overs and England chased the score in 19 overs by 5 wickets (138/5). In this world cup, Indian batsman Virat Kohli was the top run scorer with 296 runs in 6 matches. While Sri Lankan bowler, Wanindu Hasaranga, was the most wicket-taker. He took 15 wickets in 8 matches with 6.41 economy. Sam Curran was named the Player of the match and also the Player of the tournament.

2022 Formula One

The 2022 Formula One season began very interestingly. Max Verstappen had 2 DNF’s after the first three races after several problems, Mercedes didn’t managed to build a competitive car like the years before, and Ferrari was back at the top. Charles Leclerc was the championship leader for the first five races, but after a DNF in Spain, he lost it to Max Verstappen. The Dutchman dominated since then and never lost his first place as championship leader. Max Verstappen won his second consecutive World Title, and Red Bull Racing won the Constructors Title with a few races left on the calendar. The second-place battle was exciting until the last lap between Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc. Before the final Grand Prix, they were on the same amount of points, but Leclerc finished just a few seconds before Pérez and finished as runner-up.

Verstappen World Champion

Furthermore, Carlos Sainz and George Russel won their first Grand Prix this season. It was a tough season for seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. It was his first season as Formula 1 driver without a race win. And it was the final season for Sebastian Vettel, a four-time World Champion. He finished his last race in the points and got a guard of honour from the rest of the drivers.

What will 2023 bring us?

2022 was another great sports year with many remarkable moments. Now it’s time to look forward to 2023.

A new Formula One season will start on the 5th of March in Bahrain, and we will see some new faces. Nyck de Vries joins Alpha Tauri, Oscar Piastri joins McLaren, Nico Hülkenberg joins Haas, and Logan Sargeant joins Williams.

The Nations League Final Four will take place in the Netherlands from the 14th of June until the 18th of June. The teams participating in the Final Four are: the Netherlands, Croatia, Italy and Spain.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held from the 20th of July until the 20th of August in Costa Rica.

There will also be a ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023, which will be the 13th edition of this tournament. The World Cup has been scheduled between October 2023 and 26 November 2023. This will be the first ICC World Cup event completely hosted by India.

Sportmonks Launches Live Chainlink Node to Provide Smart Contracts Premier Sports Data

We are pleased to announce that the Sportmonks Chainlink node is live and fully operational on mainnet, enabling smart contracts to access our premium sports data, starting with cricket, but with plans to extend to football/soccer and F1. Developers can now call our Chainlink node to get real-time and cryptographically signed sports game results and toss results, which can then be used to build new types of decentralized prediction markets, fantasy sports, and dynamic NFTs.

As the most widely used and time-tested oracle solution, Chainlink provides a secure and fully functional way to get our existing suite of APIs compatible with leading blockchain networks. By operating a Chainlink node, we now have a single gateway to supply our data to any current or future blockchain, as well as cryptographically sign our data on-chain to generate integrity guarantees on it originating from Sportmonks. The node setup process was seamless and required minimal time and technical effort, all while exposing our data to emerging decentralized sports markets across different blockchains.

For more information on why we selected Chainlink, read our previous announcement to explore this topic in detail. If you are a developer and want to learn how to access our node, visit the following Chainlink documentation.

Sportmonks is a provider of reliable sports data feeds, powered by a fast, highly available, and easy to implement API. We currently provide live data on three sports: football/soccer, F1, and cricket. In our most popular API, soccer, we offer a variety of data such as live scores, player stats, team stats, seasons stats, bookmakers and markets, (live) odds, predictions, and coverage across more than 1,200 leagues.

We look forward to providing smart contract developers with on-chain access to these high-quality and high-uptime data feeds, enabling the creation of more fair, transparent, and tamper-proof sports applications and markets. This is just the beginning of a new parallel decentralized ecosystem for sports, and Chainlink empowers us to directly participate in its provisioning and growth.

“We are excited to launch a live node on the Chainlink Network, giving smart contract developers the ability to obtain premium sports data from the Sportmonks API,” stated Jurgen Kolkman, CEO of Sportmonks. “Through the Chainlink node, we can integrate with emerging blockchain markets in an accelerated and low-overhead manner, while also being future-proofed to any unexpected changes that may occur, such as the rise of new blockchain ecosystems.”

About Chainlink

Chainlink is the most widely used and secure way to power universally connected smart contracts. With Chainlink, developers can connect any blockchain with high-quality data sources from other blockchains as well as real-world data. Managed by a global, decentralized community of hundreds of thousands of people, Chainlink is introducing a fairer model for contracts. Its network currently secures billions of dollars in value for smart contracts across the decentralized finance (DeFi), insurance and gaming ecosystems, among others.

Chainlink is trusted by hundreds of organizations to deliver definitive truth via secure, reliable data feeds. To learn more, visit chain.link, subscribe to the Chainlink newsletter and follow @chainlink on Twitter.

Sportmonks to Launch a Chainlink Node to Bring Sports Data to Blockchain Applications

We’re excited to announce that Sportmonks, a leading sports data provider, will be launching our own Chainlink node to bring our sports data directly to blockchain applications across the leading networks. Through the Chainlink node, we can get our full suite of existing APIs blockchain-enabled, allowing us to broadcast the data directly on-chain to be consumed by decentralized applications like prediction markets, fantasy sports leagues, sports-based NFTs, and more. Additionally, we can use the Chainlink node to cryptographically sign our data on-chain to prove it originated from our API without tampering, further adding to its reliability in determining contract outcomes in an automated manner.

Our immediate focus within blockchain markets will be using the Chainlink node to bring soccer data on-chain, particularly from the English Premier League. However, we plan to expand in the future to include additional sports data such as for other football/soccer leagues, F1 racing, cricket, and more.

Sportmonks’ New Look & Feel

We are live!

If you’re reading this you might have noticed quite some changes here and there. Such as a new logo, website, and house style, faster API 2.0. Our first step towards many innovations in 2021!

We’ll also be more active on social media from now on. Expect various posts about our newest features, products, sales, and much more.

Today, we’ll be giving you some insights into why we decided to rebrand ourselves and what this means for the future.

Rebuilding the website

Some of you who have stuck with us since the beginning may know that we started out as Soccerama and later rebranded to Sportmonks in 2017. This means that our last major website overhaul was four years ago.

With our previous website, the UI and user experience left a lot to be desired. Navigating through the website didn’t go smoothly, webpages were cluttered, and overall just looked outdated. Moreover, the customer platform was severely simplistic. Too simplistic, in fact. It lacked important features and selecting a paid plan was very unclear.

So, this was something we definitely wanted to address, both the main website and the customer platform. In order to realize this, we had no choice but to rebuild Sportmonks from the ground up. This time around, it will be more user friendly, navigating will feel much more intuitive, and we’ve added a plethora of new cool features to the customer platform, which has been dubbed My Sportmonks.

Our primary aim was to give more support to our loyal and awesome customers. Make no mistake, we would never have been able to create such a great product without the support, advice and feedback from our customer base. Together we will create the future of sports.

A new identity

At the same time, while plans were made to rebuild our website, we also realized that now might be a great opportunity for a new style.

The old website represented us correctly back when we first started out. A small start-up company looking to provide people with affordable, but good quality football data.

However, four years later, we’ve grown out to be a massively profitable and sustainable business. Our Sportmonks platform has proven to be a future-proof platform for sports enthusiasts from all over the world, and now it is time to further build upon that.

So, what kind of identity do we want to radiate, you might ask. Our goal was to be perceived as this young, fresh, professional, but fun and innovative company. A company looking to upset the world of sports data with affordable, yet high-quality sports data.

This, unfortunately, meant that we had to replace our trustworthy old Sportmonks logo, in order to embrace our new identity.

But fear not! Our new logo with brand new colour styles will help us take on the world of sports data for the next couple of years.

Future plans

We hope to continue delivering high-quality sports data for an affordable price in the future and to become the #1 sports data platform, which is certainly possible if we continue to grow as hard as the past four years.

We’ll achieve this one step at a time by releasing new add-ons, APIs, sports, and new data features. The first steps now have been taken to start building up from a total new Sportmonks back-end platform. This will give us the power to build/release many new stuff in a short period of time.

Once again, we at Sportmonks greatly appreciate your continued support for the past four years and this restyle will ultimately be of great significance for both parties. We strive to help our loyal customers as much as possible and we listen to all the feedback you can give us.

So please, do look forward to what more we will bring in 2021!

A new website and new changes

If you’re reading this, you’re already on our brand new Sportmonks website! Our new website has a more contemporary style, which better fits our current goals and vision.

Apart from having improved the look and feel of our website, we also have made changes that are relevant to all our customers. In this blog, we will inform you what the changes mean for you.

Before, we discuss the new changes. Note that as an existing customer with an existing subscription, you won’t have to do anything. Your current active subscription remains as is, with the same price you were paying before. . Read more below.

Changes to plans

The most important change is that we have decided to reform our paid plans. If you choose to change your current plan to one of our new plans.

Football

football plan changes

Euro plan
The Euro plan has been changed as you look to the league coverage. A few extra leagues have been added, but also a few leagues have been removed. Check the table below.

euro plan changes

World Plan
As you can see, the World Plan has been significantly expanded with 50 more football leagues. The new list of World Plan Leagues can be found on our World Plan page.

Enterprise Plan

We also renamed the Pro plan to the Enterprise plan. Moreover, the Enterprise plan will be geared towards entrepreneurs looking to create professional sports business projects. An added feature of the Enterprise plan is that Sportmonks will be tuning the Enterprise plan to the needs of the customer. We’ll look together at what you’re creating and offer advice for the plan that best fits your project.

Note that for Cricket the plans will be the same, with the exception of the Pro plan being renamed to Enterprise plan.

cricket plan changes

There are no changes in our Formula One plans.

Add-ons

Moving onto the add-ons. Some of you may already have requested more API calls or made use of our Prediction API.

In 2021 you’ll have the option of manually editing your active subscription to include add-ons. For example, you have the Euro Plan Standard, but you would like to have extra API calls and the Prediction API. You no longer have to contact us, but can simply do this yourself in My Sportmonks.

Later in the year, we also hope to offer webhooks as our third add-on.

My Sportmonks

We have created a new environment for you to manage your plans, API calls, etc. This new environment has been given the name: My Sportmonks.
We migrated your old Sportmonks credentials, so you can simply log into the new environment with your old username and password.

My Sportmonks will have the same style as our website’s and will be much easier to navigate. New HUD, intuitive UI, and a slick design will help you create your dream application more easily.

The end goal of My Sportmonks is to provide you with the all tools and features you need to get started. My Sportmonks is live now, but still in its most basic form. Over the next months, we’ll be actively working on improving My Sportmonks as well as add new features.

The Growing Demand for High-Quality Football Data

Football data is the foundation of livescore apps, betting platforms, fantasy sports, and analytics tools. As the industry becomes more competitive, having accurate, real-time, and reliable data is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity.

The right Football API provider can give your project an edge by offering live scores, detailed match statistics, historical data, and advanced metrics like xG (Expected Goals). But with so many options available, how do you choose the best one?

Making the Right Choice from the Start

When I first started working with football data in 2016, I underestimated how difficult it would be to find the right provider. At the time, I thought switching providers would be easy if I wasn’t satisfied. I was wrong.

Your entire platform is built on your data provider’s structure. Changing providers means:

  1. Rewriting integrations and reformatting data, which takes valuable development time.
  2. Disrupting user experience with potential inconsistencies or downtime.
  3. Dealing with unexpected costs for migration, testing, and adjustments.

That’s why it’s critical to choose the right provider from the beginning—one that offers scalability, high-quality data, and flexible integration options to support your project’s long-term success.

What to Expect in This Guide

This guide will help you identify key factors when selecting a football API provider, avoid common pitfalls, and find the best solution for your needs.

At Sportmonks, we understand these challenges firsthand. That’s why we provide a highly flexible Football API, trusted by 30,000+ developers, with comprehensive data coverage, real-time updates, and seamless integration options.

Now, let’s start by looking at the most common shortcomings of football API providers—and how to avoid them.
